Explore the stunning artistry of African trade beads with this beautiful matching strand of NEW powder glass Krobo beads, handcrafted by the skilled artisans of Kroboland, Ghana, West Africa. These beads are a modern homage to the old Venetian fancy glass trade beads.

  • Strand Length: 26" (66 cm)
  • Bead Size: 11 - 12 mm in diameter

Each bead is meticulously created from recycled glass bottles and other glass items, which are ground into powder and then carefully molded into these exquisite beads. The entire process is 100% handmade, ensuring each bead's uniqueness and quality.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

Artistry and Technique

The creation of these fancy Krobo beads is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Krobo people in Ghana. Artisans begin by crushing recycled glass into a fine powder. This powder is then meticulously placed into clay molds and baked in traditional kilns. The detailed decoration process sets these beads apart. Using a combination of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes, intricate patterns and vibrant designs are created. Skilled artisans use metal or wooden tools to etch or paint detailed motifs onto the beads.

Firing Process

Once decorated, the beads are fired in a kiln at high temperatures. This fuses the glass powder, setting the designs in place and giving the beads their final form. This meticulous process results in the unique and beautiful beads that are highly sought after in the world of jewelry making.

Trade beads have played a significant role in the history and culture of Ghana and Africa. They were historically used as a medium of exchange and are still cherished today for their beauty and cultural significance.
