Fancy Powder Glass Beads - Authentic African Trade Beads from Ghana

Discover the exquisite craftsmanship of our fancy powder glass beads, handmade by the talented artisans of Kroboland in Ghana, West Africa. These beads are inspired by the classic Venetian trade beads, blending tradition with contemporary artistry.

  • Strand Length: 24 1/2" (62 cm)
  • Bead Size: 12 - 13 mm in diameter

Each bead is meticulously crafted from recycled glass, including bottles and other glass items. The glass is ground into a fine powder and then shaped into molds to create these stunning beads. The entire process is done by hand, ensuring each bead's unique character and high quality.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

The Art of Creating Fancy Glass Beads

The creation of these fancy glass beads is a testament to the skill and tradition of the Krobo people. The process begins with crushing recycled glass into a fine powder. This powder is then carefully placed into clay molds, often with a cassava leaf stem at the center to create the bead's hole.

Decoration: What sets fancy beads apart is the detailed decoration process. Artisans use a combination of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes to create intricate patterns and vibrant designs. They may use metal or wooden tools to etch or paint detailed motifs onto the beads, resulting in stunning and unique pieces.

Firing: The decorated beads are then fired in a kiln. The high temperatures fuse the glass powder and set the designs in place, giving the beads their final form. This process not only enhances the durability of the beads but also makes the colors more vivid and enduring.

Trade beads hold significant cultural and historical importance in Ghana and across Africa. They were used historically for trade and as currency, playing a crucial role in the economic and social interactions among different tribes and regions. Today, they are cherished for their beauty and the rich heritage they represent.
