Translucent Krobo Glass Beads - Authentic African Trade Beads from Ghana
Experience the beauty of our translucent powder glass beads, meticulously handcrafted by the skilled artisans of Kroboland in Ghana, West Africa. These beads imitate the classic style of old Venetian glass trade beads, providing a touch of history and elegance to your jewelry designs.
- Strand Length: Approximately 21 1/2" (54.5 cm) long
- Bead Size: 13 - 14 mm in diameter
Each bead is created from recycled glass bottles and other glass items that are finely crushed into powder. This powder is then carefully poured into molds to form the beautifully translucent beads you see here. Our beads are 100% handmade, ensuring each one is unique and of the highest quality.
YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).
The Craftsmanship of Krobo Beads
The people of Kroboland have perfected the art of bead-making over generations. By using crushed recycled glass, they not only create stunning beads but also contribute to environmental sustainability. The process begins with pulverizing the glass into a fine powder, which is then skillfully poured into clay molds. The molds are heated in a kiln, fusing the glass powder into solid, durable beads. This traditional technique reflects the ingenuity and cultural heritage of the Krobo people.
Trade beads have played a significant role in African history, serving not only as decorative items but also as a form of currency and a means of cultural exchange. Owning a strand of Krobo glass beads is owning a piece of this rich heritage.

I like it's muted pink-ness :) although some of the beads are quite speckled with some sort of blackish stuff.
