Beautiful New African Trade Beads - Fancy Powder Glass Beads from Ghana

Discover the exquisite craftsmanship of these new powder glass African beads, meticulously handmade by the talented artisans of Kroboland, Ghana. Inspired by the classic Venetian fancy trade beads, these stunning beads are a vibrant addition to any jewelry collection.

  • Strand Length: 23 3/4" (60.5 cm)
  • Bead Size: 13 mm in diameter

These beads are crafted from recycled glass, primarily sourced from discarded bottles and other glass items. The glass is ground into a fine powder and carefully molded to create each bead's unique shape. The process is entirely manual, ensuring each bead is one-of-a-kind.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

Intricate Decoration and Firing Process

What sets these fancy beads apart is the detailed decoration process. Artisans use a combination of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes to create intricate patterns and vibrant designs. Using metal or wooden tools, they etch or paint detailed motifs onto the beads. Once decorated, the beads undergo firing in a kiln at high temperatures. This fuses the glass powder and sets the designs in place, giving the beads their final form.

The Art of Krobo Bead Making

The Krobo people of Ghana have perfected the art of bead making over generations. This tradition not only supports their local economy but also preserves a vital aspect of their cultural heritage. Trade beads have played a significant role in African history, serving as both currency and symbols of social status. Today, these beautiful beads continue to be a cherished part of African art and culture.
