Elegant African Trade Powder Glass Beads - Handmade in Ghana

Discover the exquisite artistry of our powder glass beads, handcrafted by the talented artisans of Kroboland in Ghana, West Africa. These beautiful beads, inspired by old Venetian Millefiori trade beads, add a touch of history and culture to your jewelry collection.

  • Strand Length: Approximately 26" (67 cm)
  • Bead Size: Approximately 10 mm in diameter

Each bead is meticulously made from recycled glass bottles and other glass items, which are ground into a fine powder, placed into molds, and transformed into these stunning beads through an intricate process. The result is a strand of beads that is not only visually striking but also environmentally conscious.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

Traditional Krobo Beadmaking Techniques

The people of Kroboland employ time-honored techniques to produce these fancy glass beads. The process begins with the meticulous grinding of glass into a fine powder. Artisans then fill molds with this powder, often layering different colors to create unique designs. Natural dyes and glass fragments are used to enhance the intricate patterns and vibrant colors that set these beads apart.

Detailed Decoration

What makes fancy beads unique is their detailed decoration. Artisans use various tools, including metal and wooden instruments, to etch or paint intricate motifs onto the beads. These designs often feature traditional symbols and patterns that reflect the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Firing Process

Once decorated, the beads are carefully fired in a kiln. The high temperatures fuse the glass powder and set the designs in place, giving the beads their final, polished form. This firing process not only solidifies the beads but also ensures their durability and vibrant appearance.

The significance of trade beads in Ghana and Africa cannot be overstated. Historically, these beads were used as a form of currency and played a crucial role in trade and social ceremonies. Today, they continue to be cherished for their beauty and cultural value.
