Venetian wound glass beads, also known as lampwork beads, were meticulously handmade in Venice, Italy, by heating rods of glass over an open flame and winding them around a mandrel. The trail decoration technique, visible on these beads, was applied while the glass was still malleable, creating the intricate patterns seen today.

These trade beads played a crucial role in African markets, particularly in Ghana and other parts of West Africa. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, they were highly valued and used as a form of currency in exchange for goods and services. Today, they are prized for their historical significance and beautiful craftsmanship.
