Traditional Krobo Fused Bead-Making Technique

The Krobo people of Ghana have perfected the art of creating beautiful and unique glass beads using recycled materials. The process begins with the collection and preparation of small size glass beads, which are meticulously cleaned and placed into clay molds that determine the shape and size of the larger beads.

The molds filled with small glass beads are then fired in a kiln at high temperatures. This process fuses the smaller beads together to form larger beads, resulting in solid, opaque beads with vibrant colors. Once cooled, the beads are removed from the molds and often polished or refined to smooth out any rough edges.

Krobo beads hold significant cultural value in Ghana, frequently used in ceremonies and as symbols of status and identity. Their vibrant colors and intricate patterns make them a cherished element of Ghanaian heritage.
