Rare Antique Venetian Lampwork "Eye" Glass Trade Beads with Trail Decoration

Rare Antique Venetian Lampwork "Eye" Glass Trade Beads with Trail Decoration

These three beautiful and rare Venetian "Eye" lampwork trade beads are a stunning example of antique glass craftsmanship. Each bead is meticulously hand-wound with intricate trail decorations, showcasing the artistry of Venetian beadmakers from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. These beads were widely traded across Africa, especially in Ghana, and hold immense historical value. Their striking design and rich history make them a prized addition to any collection of antique African trade beads.

  • Bead Size: 13-14 mm X 12 mm
  • Condition: Very good (a few hairline cracks and air bubbles that do not affect the strength)

The technique used to create these beads is known as lampwork, or wound glass. Skilled artisans in Venice would heat glass rods over an open flame, winding the molten glass around a metal rod to form each bead. This labor-intensive process allowed for intricate designs, such as the distinctive "eye" and trail patterns seen here. These beads were then traded extensively across Africa, where they became highly valued for their beauty and symbolic significance.
