Antique Black Striped Venetian Glass Trade Beads - 14-15mm

Antique Black Striped Venetian Glass Trade Beads - 14-15mm

These beautiful, antique black striped Venetian wound glass trade beads feature intricate trail decorations, reflecting the exceptional craftsmanship of the late 1800s to early 1900s. Historically significant, these beads were created in Venice and traded across Africa, particularly in Ghana.

  • Bead Size: 14-15 mm in length
  • Bead Width: 10 mm
  • Condition: Excellent (minor decoration loss, see photos)

These large, matching beads carry a rich history, once used as currency and worn as symbols of status and wealth in African trade. The trail decoration, combined with the distinctive black and striped pattern, enhances their uniqueness and desirability among collectors.

Each bead was created using the ancient lampwork (wound) technique, where molten glass was wound around a mandrel, decorated with trails of colored glass. Venetian lampwork beads were highly sought after during the African trade, particularly in West Africa, where they played a key role in commerce and cultural exchanges.
