Crafting Technique of Krobo Recycled Glass Beads
These exceptional beads are made using glass fragments, a hallmark of the Krobo bead-making tradition:
- Collection and Preparation: Artisans collect and clean discarded glass items like bottles. These are broken into small fragments.
- Molding: The fragments are placed into clay molds to shape the beads.
- Firing: Molds are heated in a kiln, fusing the glass without completely melting it. This process preserves the translucent and variegated qualities of the beads.
- Finishing: After cooling, the beads are polished or refined to smooth out rough edges.
The resulting beads are uniquely translucent, showcasing patterns and hues that reflect the essence of African artistry. Trade beads have been central to Ghanaian culture, symbolizing status, identity, and tradition, and continue to inspire collectors worldwide.
