The Lost Wax Technique & Significance of Brass Beads in Ghana
The lost wax technique is an ancient and highly skilled process that has been used in West Africa for centuries. To create each bead, a wax model is hand-carved and covered in clay. Once the clay hardens, it forms a mold, and the wax is melted away, leaving a cavity for the molten brass. After casting, the mold is broken to reveal the finished bead, meaning each mold can only be used once.
Brass beads hold great cultural significance in Ghana, especially among the Ashanti people. They have been used in traditional ceremonies, as symbols of status and wealth, and as items of trade for centuries. Today, these beads are cherished for their beauty and craftsmanship, making them a popular choice for jewelry and décor around the world.
