Experience the beauty and craftsmanship of our beautiful strand of NEW glass (fragments) African beads, handmade by the skilled artisans of Kroboland in Ghana, West Africa. These stunning beads imitate the old "Dutch Annular" glass trade beads, showcasing vibrant colors and intricate patterns that reflect the rich cultural heritage of the region.

  • Strand length: 21 1/4" (54 cm)
  • Bead size: 11 - 12 mm in diameter

Each bead is meticulously crafted from recycled glass fragments, which are placed into clay molds and fired at high temperatures. This process results in unique, translucent beads that retain some of their original colors and variegated appearance. The beads are then polished to smooth out any rough edges, ensuring a high-quality finish.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

The Technique Behind Krobo Beads

The artisans of the Krobo region use an intricate process to create these recycled glass beads. Glass bottles and other items are collected, cleaned, and broken into small fragments. These fragments are then placed into clay molds and fired in a kiln. The high temperatures fuse the glass pieces together without melting them completely, preserving their unique colors and translucency.

These Krobo beads are more than just beautiful pieces of jewelry; they are a significant part of Ghanaian culture. Often used in ceremonies and as symbols of status and identity, these beads are a testament to the rich traditions and skilled craftsmanship of the Krobo people.
