Handmade Fancy Powder Glass Beads - African Trade Beads from Ghana

Experience the beauty and craftsmanship of fancy powder glass beads from Kroboland, Ghana. These exquisite beads are crafted to imitate old Venetian fancy trade beads, showcasing vibrant designs and intricate patterns that make them truly unique.

  • Strand Length: Approximately 26 1/4" (67 cm)
  • Bead Size: Approximately 9 mm in diameter

These beads are made from recycled materials, including bottles and other glass items, which are ground into powder and then molded into these beautiful beads. Each bead is 100% handmade, ensuring that your strand is as unique as the craftsmanship that goes into it.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

Artisan Technique

The creation of these fancy glass beads is a testament to the skill and tradition of the Krobo people. The process begins with crushing glass bottles into a fine powder. This powder is then carefully placed into molds, often made from clay, to shape the beads. Once molded, the beads undergo a detailed decoration process.

Decoration

What sets fancy beads apart is their detailed decoration. Artisans use a combination of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes to create intricate patterns and vibrant designs. Using metal or wooden tools, they etch or paint detailed motifs onto the beads, adding layers of artistry to each piece.

Firing

After decoration, the beads are fired in a kiln. The high temperatures fuse the glass powder and set the designs in place, giving the beads their final, stunning form. This process not only ensures the durability of the beads but also enhances their vibrant colors and intricate patterns.

The Importance of Trade Beads

Trade beads have a rich history in Ghana and across Africa. They were historically used as a form of currency and played a significant role in trade and cultural exchange. Today, they continue to be valued for their beauty and craftsmanship, representing a vibrant part of African heritage.
