Discover the beauty and craftsmanship of our Vibrant Ghanaian Krobo Powder Glass Beads. These stunning beads are handmade by the skilled artisans of Kroboland in Ghana, West Africa. Each bead on this 26 1/2" (67 cm) strand imitates the intricate designs of old Venetian fancy trade beads, making it a unique addition to any collection.

  • Strand Length: 26 1/2" (67 cm)
  • Bead Size: 8 mm in diameter

Our Krobo beads are made from recycled bottles and other glass items, which are crushed into powder and then molded to create these exquisite beads. This environmentally friendly process not only produces beautiful beads but also supports sustainable practices in the local community.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

Technique and Tradition

The people of Kroboland have been producing these fancy glass beads for generations. The process starts with crushing recycled glass into a fine powder. This powder is then carefully placed into clay molds, where artisans shape and form each bead by hand. The detailed decoration process is what truly sets these beads apart. Using a combination of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes, the artisans create intricate patterns and vibrant designs. They use metal or wooden tools to etch or paint detailed motifs onto the beads, adding a unique touch to each one.

Decoration and Firing

Once decorated, the beads are fired in a kiln at high temperatures. This process fuses the glass powder and sets the designs in place, giving the beads their final form. The result is a strand of beads that is not only beautiful but also a testament to the rich cultural heritage and skilled craftsmanship of the Krobo people.

Trade beads have played a significant role in African history, serving not only as decorative items but also as a form of currency and a symbol of social status. Our Krobo beads continue this tradition, allowing you to own a piece of African heritage and artistry.
