Discover the exquisite beauty of our African trade beads, crafted by the talented artisans of Kroboland, Ghana. These stunning beads, imitating old Venetian disk trade beads, are a testament to the rich cultural heritage and skilled craftsmanship of the Krobo people.

  • Strand Length: 23 1/2" (59.5 cm)
  • Bead Size: 14 mm in diameter

Each bead is meticulously handmade from recycled glass bottles and other glass items. The glass is crushed into a fine powder, placed into molds, and then transformed into these beautiful beads. This sustainable practice not only creates unique and vibrant beads but also helps in reducing environmental waste.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

The Krobo people of Ghana have been making these recycled glass beads for generations, utilizing traditional techniques that have been passed down through the ages. These beads are more than just decorative items; they hold cultural significance and are often used in ceremonies, festivals, and as symbols of social status within the community.

The process of making these beads involves crushing recycled glass into a fine powder, which is then carefully poured into clay molds. The molds are heated in kilns, causing the glass powder to fuse and form solid beads. After cooling, each bead is hand-polished to achieve a smooth finish. This labor-intensive process results in one-of-a-kind beads that are cherished by collectors and jewelry makers worldwide.

Trade beads have played a crucial role in African history, serving as a medium of exchange and a symbol of wealth and trade relationships. Today, these Ghana glass beads continue to be a popular choice for creating unique jewelry pieces that carry a rich cultural heritage.
