These beads are inspired by old Venetian fancy trade beads, offering a unique blend of traditional African artistry and historical elegance.

Each bead is meticulously made from recycled glass bottles and other glass items, transformed into powder and carefully molded into beautiful beads. This eco-friendly process not only showcases the creativity of the Krobo people but also promotes sustainability.

Bead Size Diameter: 10 mm

Strand Length: 24" (61 cm) of beads

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

The Art of Krobo Bead Making

The technique used by the Krobo people to create these fancy glass beads is a testament to their rich cultural heritage. Starting with crushed glass, the artisans use molds to shape the beads before they are decorated. What sets these beads apart is the intricate decoration process. Artisans combine glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes to craft detailed patterns and vibrant designs. They often use metal or wooden tools to etch or paint motifs onto the beads.

Once decorated, the beads are fired in a kiln at high temperatures. This process fuses the glass powder and sets the designs in place, giving the beads their final form and a durable finish.

Trade beads have a significant historical importance in Ghana and across Africa, symbolizing wealth, social status, and cultural identity. These Krobo beads continue this legacy, making them not just beautiful adornments but also pieces of African history.
