Discover the exquisite artistry of our African trade beads, crafted from recycled glass by the skilled artisans of Kroboland in Ghana, West Africa. These stunning beads, inspired by the classic "Dutch Annular" glass trade beads, are a testament to the rich cultural heritage and innovative techniques of the Krobo people.

  • Strand Length: Approximately 20 1/2" (52 cm)
  • Bead Size: 10 - 12 mm in diameter

Each bead is meticulously handmade from glass fragments, placed into molds to create their unique and eye-catching appearance. The result is a beautiful strand of translucent beads that vary slightly in color and pattern, showcasing the individuality of each piece.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

The process of making these Krobo beads involves several intricate steps:

  • Collection and Preparation: Glass bottles and other glass items are gathered, cleaned, and broken into small fragments.
  • Molding: The glass fragments are placed into clay molds, determining the shape and size of each bead.
  • Firing: The molds with the glass fragments are fired in a kiln at high temperatures, fusing the fragments together while preserving their original colors and translucency.
  • Finishing: Once cooled, the beads are removed from the molds, polished, and refined to smooth out any rough edges.

These beads are not only vibrant and colorful but also hold significant cultural value in Ghanaian society, often used in ceremonies and as symbols of status and identity.
