Introducing a stunning strand of NEW powder glass African beads, meticulously crafted by the talented artisans of Kroboland, Ghana. These beads beautifully imitate the classic elegance of old Venetian fancy trade beads.

  • Strand Length: 26 1/2" (67.5 cm)
  • Bead Size: 10 - 11 mm in diameter

These exquisite beads are made from recycled bottles and other glass items. The glass is ground into powder and then placed into molds to create these remarkable beads. Each bead is 100% handmade, showcasing the artisans' dedication to their craft.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

Crafting Technique

The people of Kroboland employ traditional techniques to produce these fancy glass beads. The process begins with crushing recycled glass into a fine powder. This powder is then carefully placed into clay molds and heated in a kiln until the glass fuses. Once cooled, the beads are removed from the molds and hand-decorated.

Decoration

What sets these fancy beads apart is the intricate decoration process. Artisans use a combination of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes to create detailed patterns and vibrant designs. Using metal or wooden tools, they etch or paint intricate motifs onto each bead, ensuring every piece is unique.

Firing

After decoration, the beads are fired again in a kiln. The high temperatures ensure the glass powder fuses perfectly, setting the designs in place and giving the beads their final, polished appearance.

Trade beads hold significant cultural and historical importance in Ghana and across Africa. They have been used for centuries as a form of currency and for social and ceremonial purposes. Today, these beads are cherished for their beauty and craftsmanship, making them highly sought after by collectors and jewelry makers alike.
