Exquisite Fancy Powder Glass Beads from Ghana - African Trade Beads

Discover the beauty of these fancy powder glass beads, handmade by the talented artisans of Kroboland in Ghana, West Africa. Each bead on this stunning strand replicates the intricate designs of old Venetian fancy trade beads, showcasing vibrant patterns and rich colors.

  • Strand Length: Approximately 27" (69 cm)
  • Bead Size: 11 - 12 mm in diameter

These beads are crafted from recycled bottles and other glass items, which are ground into powder and then molded to form these exquisite beads. The entire process is 100% handmade, ensuring each bead is unique and of the highest quality.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

Traditional Krobo Bead-Making Technique

The creation of these fancy glass beads involves a meticulous and traditional process that has been passed down through generations in Kroboland. The artisans grind recycled glass into a fine powder, which is then carefully placed into molds. Using a combination of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes, they craft intricate patterns and vibrant designs. Metal or wooden tools are used to etch or paint detailed motifs onto each bead.

Once decorated, the beads are fired in a kiln at high temperatures. This process fuses the glass powder and sets the designs in place, resulting in the beautiful and durable beads you see. These beads are not only a testament to the skill of the Krobo artisans but also a vital part of Ghanaian and African trade bead history.
