Introducing our beautiful matching strand of NEW powder glass African beads, meticulously handcrafted by the skilled artisans of Kroboland in Ghana, West Africa. These beads are designed to imitate the exquisite old Venetian FANCY trade beads, showcasing a perfect blend of tradition and artistry.

  • Strand Length: Approximately 25" (63.5 cm) long
  • Bead Size: Approximately 10 mm in diameter

Each bead is made from recycled glass bottles and other glass items that are ground into powder, carefully placed into molds, and transformed into these stunning beads. The entire process is 100% handmade, ensuring that each strand is unique and of the highest quality.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

Craftsmanship and Technique

The creation of these fancy glass beads involves a fascinating and intricate technique developed by the Krobo people of Ghana. Once the glass powder is prepared, it is placed into molds and heated to fuse the particles together. This method not only recycles glass but also preserves the traditional bead-making art.

Decoration and Firing

What sets these fancy beads apart is their detailed decoration process. Artisans skillfully use a combination of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes to create intricate patterns and vibrant designs. Metal or wooden tools are often employed to etch or paint detailed motifs onto the beads. The decorated beads are then fired in a kiln, where high temperatures fuse the glass powder and set the designs in place, giving the beads their final, exquisite form.

Trade beads hold significant cultural and economic importance in Ghana and throughout Africa. They have been used for centuries as a medium of exchange and are treasured for their beauty and craftsmanship. Owning a strand of these beads means holding a piece of African heritage and artistry.
