The Art of Bead Making in Krobo, Ghana

The people of Krobo in Ghana have perfected the art of bead making, using traditional techniques passed down through generations. The process begins with crushing recycled glass into a fine powder, which is then carefully placed into clay molds. These molds are heated in a kiln, where the high temperatures fuse the glass powder, creating the bead's shape and design.

Intricate Decoration

What sets these fancy beads apart is their detailed decoration. Artisans use a mix of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes to create intricate patterns and vibrant designs. They employ metal or wooden tools to etch or paint detailed motifs onto the beads, adding a unique touch to each piece.

Firing Process

After decoration, the beads are fired once more in a kiln. This final firing fuses the glass fragments and natural dyes, ensuring the designs are permanent and the beads achieve their final, durable form.

These beads are not only beautiful but also carry a significant cultural heritage, representing the rich history of trade beads in Ghana and Africa.
