Handmade African Brass Beads from Ghana – 21" Strand, Lost Wax Technique

Handmade African Brass Beads from Ghana – 21" Strand, Lost Wax Technique

Beautiful matching strand of handmade brass beads, crafted by the skilled artisans of the Ashanti people in Ghana, West Africa. These stunning beads are created using the ancient "Lost Wax" technique, a method that has been passed down through generations.

Each bead is formed using a handcrafted wax mold, which is destroyed after casting, making every bead truly unique. The entire strand is composed of 100% handmade beads, with no two beads being exactly the same due to the intricate, manual process.

  • Strand length: Approx. 21" (53 cm) from bead to bead
  • Bead size: 26-28 mm in length and 13-14 mm in diameter

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

The beads are made by the Ashanti people of Ghana, where brass has been valued for centuries. Brass beads have held significant cultural importance, often worn for ceremonial purposes and as symbols of status, wealth, and artistry in many African communities.

The Lost Wax Technique

The "Lost Wax" casting process is a remarkable technique dating back thousands of years. Each bead begins with a wax model, intricately shaped by hand. Once the wax mold is perfected, it is covered in clay and fired, causing the wax to melt away, leaving a hollow space. Molten brass is then poured into the mold, creating the solid bead. The clay mold is destroyed in the process, ensuring that each bead is entirely unique.

Brass beads hold a long history in Ghanaian culture, particularly among the Ashanti. They have been used as currency, in adornment, and for ritualistic purposes. The beauty and cultural richness of these beads make them a treasured part of African heritage.
