Discover the beauty of our new powder glass African beads, meticulously crafted by the skilled artisans of Kroboland, Ghana, West Africa. These stunning beads imitate the old Venetian fancy trade beads, offering a blend of tradition and artistry.
- Strand Length: 24" (61 cm)
- Bead Size: 12 mm in diameter
Each bead is made from recycled bottles and other glass items that are pulverized into powder and then carefully molded into these exquisite beads. The entire process is carried out by hand, ensuring that every bead is unique and of the highest quality.
YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).
The artisans of Krobo have perfected the technique of creating fancy glass beads. The process begins with collecting and crushing glass into fine powder. This powder is then placed into molds, and intricate patterns are added using glass fragments and natural dyes. The decoration process is what sets these beads apart. Artisans use metal or wooden tools to etch or paint detailed motifs onto the beads, creating vibrant and intricate designs.
Once decorated, the beads are fired in a kiln. The high temperatures fuse the glass powder, setting the designs in place and giving the beads their final form. This technique not only highlights the artisans' skill but also preserves an important aspect of Ghanaian and African cultural heritage.
Trade beads have played a significant role in African history, used for trade and as a form of currency. Today, they continue to be a symbol of cultural identity and artistic expression.
