The Technique of Making Recycled Powder Glass Beads
The people of Krobo in Ghana have perfected the art of creating recycled powder glass beads. The process begins with collecting discarded glass bottles and other glass items. These materials are crushed into a fine powder, which is then meticulously packed into clay molds. The molds are heated in a kiln, causing the glass powder to fuse and form solid beads. After cooling, each bead is hand-painted with traditional designs and symbols, adding a unique touch to every piece.
Trade beads have played a significant role in African history and culture. They were used as a form of currency and barter in trade exchanges across the continent. Today, these beads are cherished for their beauty and craftsmanship, symbolizing a rich cultural heritage and a commitment to sustainability.
