Authentic African Trade Beads: Recycled Krobo Glass Beads from Ghana

Experience the vibrant history and exquisite craftsmanship of Ghana with these stunning Krobo glass beads. Made by the skilled artisans of Kroboland, these powder glass beads imitate the old Venetian disk trade beads, bringing a touch of African heritage to your jewelry collection.

  • Strand Length: Approximately 23 1/2" (59.5 cm)
  • Bead Size: 14 mm in diameter

Each bead is meticulously handcrafted from recycled glass bottles and other glass items. The glass is crushed into a fine powder, placed into molds, and then fired to create these unique and beautiful beads. The process is a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Krobo people, transforming discarded materials into stunning works of art.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

About the Technique

The Krobo people of Ghana have perfected the art of creating recycled glass beads through a sustainable and environmentally friendly process. This traditional method involves crushing recycled glass bottles into a fine powder, which is then placed into clay molds. The molds are heated in a kiln, fusing the glass powder into solid beads. After cooling, each bead is carefully hand-painted and polished, resulting in a beautiful, one-of-a-kind piece.

Trade beads have played a significant role in the history and culture of Ghana and Africa. They were used as a form of currency, a means of storytelling, and a symbol of wealth and status. Today, these beads continue to be cherished for their beauty and cultural significance, connecting us to a rich heritage that spans centuries.
