Authentic African Trade Beads - Fancy Powder Glass Krobo Beads from Ghana

Introducing a stunning strand of new powder glass African beads, meticulously handcrafted by the talented artisans of Kroboland, Ghana, West Africa. These beads beautifully imitate the classic Venetian fancy trade beads, showcasing intricate designs and vibrant colors that reflect the rich cultural heritage of Ghana.

  • Strand Length: Approximately 27" (68.5 cm)
  • Bead Size: Approximately 9 mm in diameter

Each bead is made from recycled glass bottles and other glass items, ground into a fine powder and then expertly molded into these exquisite beads. The entire process is done by hand, ensuring that every bead is unique.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

The Art of Krobo Bead Making

The creation of these fancy glass beads is a testament to the skill and tradition of the Krobo people. The process begins with grinding recycled glass into a fine powder. This powder is then carefully poured into clay molds, forming the base of each bead.

Decoration

What sets these fancy beads apart is their detailed decoration. Artisans use a blend of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes to craft intricate patterns and vibrant designs. Tools made of metal or wood are employed to etch or paint detailed motifs onto the beads, making each piece a work of art.

Firing

The decorated beads are then fired in a kiln. The high temperatures fuse the glass powder and set the designs in place, giving the beads their final, polished form.

Trade beads like these have been an important part of African culture and commerce for centuries, serving not only as beautiful adornments but also as a medium of exchange. By purchasing these beads, you are supporting the traditional craftsmanship and the artisans of Kroboland.
