Antique Venetian Chevron, Eye Beads, African Glass Trade Beads

Antique Venetian & African Glass Trade Beads - Chevron & Eye Beads

This stunning strand showcases a variety of old Venetian and African-made glass trade beads, featuring a mix of rare and historic bead types such as Eye beads, Fancy beads, Tic Tac Toe, King beads, Floral beads, and Chevron beads. These authentic beads were traded throughout Africa, with many dating back to the late 1800s to early 1900s, making them a true piece of history and craftsmanship.

  • Necklace length: 26 1/2" (67.5 cm)
  • Bead sizes: 7-18 mm in diameter
  • Central Chevron bead size: 23 x 17 mm
  • Condition: Overall good, with some beads exhibiting minor chipping and hairline cracks that do not affect the structural integrity. The central chevron bead shows chipping (please refer to photos).

The Venetian lampwork beads in this collection were expertly crafted using the wound glass technique, where molten glass is carefully wound around a metal rod, layer by layer. This labor-intensive process originated in Venice and was essential to creating beautiful, durable beads that were highly prized in African trade. These glass trade beads played a vital role in West African cultures, especially in regions such as Ghana, where they symbolized wealth, status, and were even used in ceremonies and as currency.
