Introducing a stunning strand of NEW recycled glass fragments African beads, meticulously crafted by the talented artisans of Kroboland in Ghana, West Africa. These beads, inspired by the classic "Dutch Annular" glass trade beads, embody the rich cultural heritage and craftsmanship of the region.

  • Strand Length: 21 1/4" (54 cm)
  • Bead Size: 12 mm in diameter

Each bead is skillfully handmade using recycled glass fragments, which are carefully placed into molds to achieve their distinctive look. This sustainable approach not only creates beautiful beads but also supports environmental conservation.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

Crafting Technique

The people of Krobo in Ghana use a traditional technique to produce these exquisite recycled glass beads. The process begins with the collection of glass bottles and other glass items, which are thoroughly cleaned and broken into small fragments. These fragments are then placed into clay molds that determine the shape and size of the beads.

The molds filled with glass fragments are fired at high temperatures in a kiln, fusing the fragments together while preserving some of their original colors and translucency. This results in beads with unique, often variegated appearances that are both vibrant and intricate.

Once cooled, the beads are removed from the molds and polished to smooth out any rough edges. These beads hold significant cultural importance in Ghanaian society, often used in ceremonies and as symbols of status and identity.
