Experience the vibrant culture of Ghana with this beautiful strand of new glass fragment African beads, meticulously handcrafted by the talented artisans of Kroboland, Ghana. These beads are designed to imitate the classic "Dutch Annular" glass trade beads, combining tradition with contemporary craftsmanship.

  • Strand Length: 21 1/4" (54 cm)
  • Bead Size: 12 mm in diameter

These beads are 100% handmade using recycled glass fragments. Each bead's creation involves a detailed process where broken glass fragments are placed into molds and fired in kilns. This technique results in beads that are uniquely translucent and often feature variegated patterns.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

The Art of Krobo Bead Making

The artisans in the Krobo region of Ghana employ a meticulous technique to create these stunning beads. The process begins with the collection and preparation of glass bottles and other glass items, which are cleaned and broken into small fragments. These fragments are then placed into clay molds that define the shape and size of the beads. The molds, filled with glass fragments, are fired at high temperatures in a kiln, fusing the glass without melting it completely. This preserves the original colors and translucency of the glass fragments, resulting in beads with vibrant colors and intricate patterns.

Krobo beads hold significant cultural value in Ghana, often used in ceremonies and as symbols of status and identity. By purchasing these beads, you not only acquire a beautiful and unique piece of art but also support the artisans and their rich cultural heritage.
