Discover the beauty and craftsmanship of our new strand of powder glass beads, expertly handmade by the talented artisans of Kroboland in Ghana, West Africa. These beads beautifully imitate the classic Venetian fancy trade beads, bringing a touch of history and culture to your jewelry designs.
- Strand length: Approximately 24 3/4" (63 cm)
- Bead size: Approximately 10 mm in diameter
Each bead is meticulously crafted from recycled bottles and other glass items, which are crushed into powder and then molded into these stunning beads. The entire process is done by hand, ensuring that each bead is unique.
YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).
Decoration Technique
What sets these fancy beads apart is the detailed decoration process. Artisans use a combination of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes to create intricate patterns and vibrant designs. Using metal or wooden tools, they etch or paint detailed motifs onto the beads, adding to their uniqueness and beauty.
Firing Process
Once decorated, the beads are fired in a kiln at high temperatures. This step fuses the glass powder and sets the designs in place, giving the beads their final form and ensuring durability and vibrancy.
Historical and Cultural Significance
The creation of these beads is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Krobo people. Trade beads have been a significant part of West African culture for centuries, used in trade, adornment, and ceremonial practices. Owning a strand of these beads is not just acquiring beautiful jewelry supplies but also a piece of African history and art.
