Experience the beauty and craftsmanship of our Handmade Ghana Powder Glass Beads, expertly crafted by the artisans of Krobo in Ghana, West Africa. These beads are a stunning imitation of the old Venetian fancy trade beads, adding a touch of history and culture to your collection.

  • Strand Length: 27" (69 cm)
  • Bead Size: Approximately 7 mm in diameter

Each bead is made from recycled glass bottles and other glass items, ground into a fine powder, and then carefully molded to create these exquisite beads. The process is entirely done by hand, ensuring that each bead is unique and carries the touch of its maker.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

Technique and Craftsmanship

The people of Krobo use a meticulous process to create these fancy glass beads. The recycled glass is crushed into a fine powder and then poured into clay molds. Artisans decorate the beads with intricate patterns using a combination of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes. Metal or wooden tools are often used to etch or paint detailed motifs, resulting in vibrant and unique designs.

Firing Process

Once decorated, the beads are fired in a kiln. The high temperatures fuse the glass powder, solidifying the intricate designs and giving the beads their final form. This firing process not only sets the designs in place but also ensures the durability and brilliance of each bead.

Importance of Trade Beads

Trade beads have played a significant role in African history, particularly in Ghana. These beads were used as a form of currency and were integral in trade and social exchanges. Today, they are cherished for their beauty and cultural significance, making them a valuable addition to any collection.
