Beautiful Recycled Powder Glass African Trade Beads – Ghana Krobo Fancy Beads

Discover the exquisite craftsmanship of our recycled powder glass beads, meticulously handmade by the talented artisans of Kroboland in Ghana, West Africa. These beads, inspired by traditional Venetian fancy trade beads, are a testament to the rich cultural heritage and exceptional skill of the Krobo people.

  • Strand Length: Approximately 26" (66 cm)
  • Bead Size: Approximately 11 mm in diameter

Each bead is crafted from recycled bottles and other glass items, which are ground into powder and then shaped using molds to create these stunning beads. The entire process is done by hand, ensuring that every bead is unique.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

Decoration: What sets these fancy beads apart is their detailed decoration process. Artisans combine glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes to create intricate patterns and vibrant designs. Using metal or wooden tools, they etch or paint detailed motifs onto the beads, resulting in unique, eye-catching pieces.

Firing: Once decorated, the beads are fired in a kiln. The high temperatures fuse the glass powder and set the designs in place, giving the beads their final form. This process not only enhances the durability of the beads but also ensures the vibrancy of their colors and patterns.

Technique: The technique of creating these beads has been passed down through generations among the Krobo people. This traditional method involves grinding recycled glass into a fine powder, placing it into molds, and then heating it in a kiln. The importance of trade beads in Ghana and Africa cannot be overstated, as they have been used for centuries in trade, rituals, and as symbols of wealth and status.
