Traditional Krobo Fused Bead-Making Technique
The Krobo region of Ghana is renowned for its intricate bead-making traditions. These fused beads are created by using small size glass beads as the raw material to form larger beads. The process begins with collecting and preparing tiny glass beads, which are then placed into molds made from clay, determining the shape and size of the finished beads.
The molds filled with these tiny beads are fired in a kiln at high temperatures, causing the small beads to fuse together into larger beads without becoming a homogeneous mass. This technique results in beads that are not translucent, maintaining their vibrant and varied appearances. Once cooled, the beads are removed from the molds and polished to smooth out any rough edges.
These fused recycled glass beads are not only stunning in appearance but also hold significant cultural value in Ghanaian society. They are often used in ceremonies and serve as symbols of status and identity.
