The Lost Wax Technique and History of Brass Beads in Ghana
Brass beads have been an integral part of Ghanaian culture for centuries, used in ceremonies, rituals, and everyday adornment. The "Lost Wax" casting method, employed by the Ashanti people, is an ancient process where a mold is first sculpted in wax. Once the wax mold is encased in clay and heated, the wax melts away, leaving a cavity in which molten brass is poured. After the brass cools and hardens, the clay mold is broken, revealing a uniquely crafted bead. This labor-intensive technique reflects the rich cultural heritage of African brass craftsmanship, which continues to thrive today in Ghana.
