Discover the exquisite craftsmanship of our Handmade Fancy African Trade Beads, meticulously created by the talented artisans of Kroboland, Ghana. These stunning beads imitate the classic beauty of old Venetian fancy trade beads, bringing a touch of history and artistry to your collection.

  • Strand Length: Approximately 24" (61 cm)
  • Bead Size: Approximately 10 mm in diameter

Made from recycled glass bottles and other glass items, these beads undergo a transformation from powdered glass to beautifully molded creations. Each bead is 100% handmade, showcasing the dedication and skill of the Krobo people.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

Artisanal Techniques

The creation of these fancy Krobo beads involves a traditional process perfected over generations. Artisans grind recycled glass into a fine powder and carefully place it into molds. What sets these beads apart is their intricate decoration. Using a combination of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes, artisans craft intricate patterns and vibrant designs. They may use metal or wooden tools to etch or paint detailed motifs onto the beads.

The decorated beads are then fired in a kiln at high temperatures, fusing the glass powder and setting the designs in place. This final firing step gives the beads their durable form and brilliant finish, making each one a unique piece of art.

Importance of Trade Beads

Trade beads have played a significant role in the cultural and economic exchanges across Africa. In Ghana, and particularly in the Krobo region, these beads are not only beautiful adornments but also symbols of history and heritage. They were used as currency, in ceremonies, and as a means of artistic expression. By owning a strand of these beads, you are not only acquiring a piece of jewelry but also a piece of African history and craftsmanship.
