African Trade Beads: Handmade Krobo Recycled Glass Beads from Ghana

Introducing a beautiful strand of NEW powder glass African beads, crafted by the skilled artisans of Kroboland in Ghana, West Africa. These beads imitate the look of old granite stone trade beads, offering a unique and authentic touch to your jewelry creations.

Size of the strand:

  • Length: 25 1/2" (65 cm)
  • Diameter of beads: 14 - 15 mm

These beads are meticulously handmade from recycled glass bottles and other glass items, which are turned into smaller fragments and then molded to create these stunning pieces.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

About Krobo Recycled Glass Beads

The artisans in the Krobo region of Ghana use a remarkable technique to produce these recycled glass beads. The process begins with the collection and preparation of glass bottles and other glass items, which are then broken into small fragments. These fragments are placed into clay molds that determine the shape and size of the beads.

The molds, filled with glass fragments, are fired in a kiln at high temperatures. This process fuses the glass fragments together while preserving some of their original colors and translucency, resulting in vibrant and variegated beads. Once cooled, the beads are removed from the molds and often polished or refined to smooth out any rough edges.

Krobo beads are not only visually stunning but also hold cultural significance in Ghanaian society. They are often used in ceremonies and serve as symbols of status and identity.
