Introducing our exquisite strand of Fancy African Trade Beads, meticulously handcrafted by the skilled artisans of Kroboland in Ghana, West Africa. These beads imitate the classic old Venetian fancy trade beads, offering a touch of history and elegance in each piece.

Size of the beads:

  • Diameter: 9 mm
  • Strand length: 25" (63.5 cm)

Our beads are crafted from recycled glass, including bottles and other glass items. The glass is ground into a fine powder and carefully molded to create these stunning beads. Each bead is a testament to the dedication and craftsmanship of the Krobo people, ensuring that every strand is unique and of the highest quality.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

Decoration: What sets fancy beads apart is the detailed decoration process. Artisans use a combination of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes to create intricate patterns and vibrant designs. They may use metal or wooden tools to etch or paint detailed motifs onto the beads.

Firing: The decorated beads are then fired in a kiln. The high temperatures fuse the glass powder and set the designs in place, giving the beads their final form.

The people of Krobo have been creating these beads for generations, using traditional methods passed down through the ages. The significance of trade beads in Ghana and Africa is profound, serving not only as beautiful adornments but also as cultural symbols and trade items that connect communities.
